Skopelos, Island First

Skopelos is the greenest island in the Aegean - pine forest running to the waterline, cliffs on the north coast, and a clifftop chapel that a film crew made famous in 2008. Most visitors meet it on a boat day from Skiathos; the island itself rewards longer. The featured filming-locations tour runs private or shared at 4.9/5 across 103 bookings, and this site covers the rest honestly: the ferry hop, the beaches, the chapel steps nobody agrees on.

How a Skopelos Day Works

Four steps, the ferry first.

  1. Get to the Sporades

Skiathos has the airport; Skopelos is a 45-90 minute ferry or flying-dolphin hop from it. Most day trips start on Skiathos for exactly that reason.

  2. Pick Boat Day or Island Days

A cruise shows you the coastline and the famous chapel from the water. Staying on the island buys the villages, the forest tracks and the beaches after the day boats leave.

  3. Respect the Chapel

Agios Ioannis Kastri is a working chapel on a rock, reached by a stair carved into the cliff. Shoulders covered, no drone, and the climb is real - the step count is disputed but the effort is not.

  4. Time the Season

May to October is the working season; July and August are hot and busy, June and September are the island at its best. Winter closes most of it.

Most people arrive at Skopelos through a film, and then stay for the island. That order is worth reversing before you book, because the island is the better story: the greenest of the Aegean islands, pine forest running down to the waterline, a harbour town stacked up a hillside, and a north coast of cliffs that boats spend all day nosing along.

The famous stop is real and it is worth it. The little chapel of Agios Ioannis Kastri sits on a rock roughly a hundred metres above the sea, reached by a stair carved into the cliff - the wedding scene of the 2008 musical was shot here, and the climb is the reason the photo looks the way it does. Kastani beach on the west coast is the other one people ask for; the bar you may remember was built for filming and taken away afterwards, which is an honest thing to know before you go looking for it.

How people actually see it. Most visitors come on a boat day from Skiathos, which is where the airport is - the ferry hop takes 45 to 90 minutes depending on the boat. The featured tour runs the filming locations private or shared, 4.9/5 across 103 bookings, and the comparison below sets it against the long-running classic (4.7/5 across 607) and an exclusive private version. Sailing days out to Alonissos and the marine park are the other good use of a Skopelos-based week.

When to come: May to October, with June and September the sweet spot - warm sea, working tavernas, and the day boats thinner than in the August peak. Bring shoes you can climb stairs in, and leave a day free for the villages: Glossa in the north is what Skopelos Town looks like without the crowd.

"Absolutely fantastic! Our private Mamma Mia Filming Locations Tour in Skopelos was one of the highlights of our trip, and a huge part of that was our wonderful host, Manolis. He made the whole experience feel personal and relaxed, while sharing fascinating stories and behind-the-scenes details about the filming of Mamma Mia!. Visiting the iconic filming locations, seeing the beautiful scenery, and standing in the very places where the movie was filmed was truly magical. Manolis knew all the best spots for photos and made sure we never felt rushed. His knowledge of Skopelos and his passion for sharing the island really made the tour special. The private tour was the perfect way to experience Skopelos. We highly recommend this tour to every Mamma Mia fan — and especially recommend having Manolis as your host! If you're visiting Skopelos, don't miss this experience. It was fun, Thank you, Manolis, for an amazing day and wonderful memories! 💙🇬🇷🎬"

"This trip was perfect! We were a group of x5 women from UK, first time in Skopelos and we booked the 5.5hrs private tour option. Manolis was a brilliant guide, warm, friendly, funny, and even offered to pick us up slightly earlier than 9am to avoid large crowds at the Chapel, and that was such a good idea!! The chapel was so quiet when we arrived, its was stunning, we were up and down the steps with no stress and no crowds. As we sat in the cafe after with our Frappes, we watched the buses arrive!! Kastani Beach was also divine, a perfect place for lunch, a swim, and a giant watermelon cocktail! The transport was a new, air conditioned minibus - so comfortable, and great views whilst driving around too. Would 100% recommend this trip, wish we could do it again!"
