Kastani: The Beach, Minus the Myth

The west-coast beach used for the film's beach scenes - pebble and sand, clear sheltered water, a taverna above. The bar you remember was built for the shoot and removed.

Updated August 2026

Kastani is the second stop on every filming-locations day, and the one that most needs expectations managed.

What is actually there

A pebble-and-sand cove on the west coast, backed by pines, with clear sheltered water and a taverna on the slope above. Sunbeds in season, decent swimming, good snorkelling along the edges. It is a genuinely lovely Greek beach that would be popular with no film attached.

What is not there

The beach bar from the film was a temporary structure, built for the production and taken away when filming finished. People still arrive looking for it. There is no set, no plaque trail and no reconstruction - the taverna above is a normal taverna, not a film prop.

Practicalities

It sits on the sheltered western side, which matters when the meltemi blows in July and August - Kastani often stays swimmable when north-coast beaches are choppy. Come early for parking in peak season; the road down is narrow. Most guided days fold it in after the chapel, which is the right order: climb in the cool, swim afterwards.
